Ammonium Hexafluorophosphate NH4PF6 CAS 16941-11-0, off white powder, colorless flake. Soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, acetone and methyl acetate. Heat to relatively high temperature decomposition. Slow hydrolysis when cooking with strong acid. Do not corrode glass at room temperature.
Manufacturing process
Ammonium hexafluorophosphate is produced by the reaction of ammonium fluoride with phosphorus pentachloride, precipitated and separated by adding nitroling acetate, precipitated by ammonia water treatment, extracted by chloroform, cooled and crystallized. It can also be prepared by reacting ammonium chloride and phosphorus pentachloride in liquid hydrogen fluoride, heating to expel hydrogen fluoride, dissolving in methanol, adding several drops of ammonia to remove iron, and drying. Used as raw material for manufacturing other hexafluorophosphates.
